Delighted to have contributed to a packed agenda at the SAHF & DaR 9th Ramadan Conference at the British Library on Friday 9th January 2026.

The SAHF and Diabetes and Ramadan International Alliance (DAR) Ramadan Conference, themed “Ramadan and Beyond Ramadan”, explored the wider health considerations of fasting both during Ramadan and throughout the year.

The programme consisted experts who spoke about how different forms of fasting affect wellbeing, metabolic health, medication use, and the management of long-term conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Sessions also covered nutrition, hydration, and practical approaches to maintaining balance and energy while fasting. By taking a broad, healthcare-focused perspective, the conference provided clear, evidence-based guidance for individuals who fast for religious, cultural, or voluntary reasons, as well as for healthcare professionals supporting them.

With Ramadan less than 6 weeks away, it's extremely important for healthcare professionals to engage with their patients who may have illnesses e.g. diabetes, high blood pressure and discuss safe ways to fast.

Diabetes UK and DaR have produced guidelines for healthcare professionals to assess risk of patients to ensure patients are assessed and advised correctly before Ramadan.

Lots of useful resources can be found on Diabetes UK website and DaR Academy App.
