There's a lot of media attention and coverage on child sexual exploitation and grooming gangs since Elon Musk tweeted on this subject last week.

The Conservatives, Reform, and the far-right have subsequently jumped on the bandwagon.

Anyone who has followed the media coverage and the debate in parliament yesterday, will know what is being suggested and portrayed here. So let me try and clarify what Islam says about sexual exploitation... Islam unequivocally prohibits any form of sexual exploitation, harm, or injustice, regardless of the victim's background, ethnicity, or religion.

Sexual exploitation is a grave sin and fundamentally contradicts the principles of Islam.

Key Teachings in Islam:

1. Prohibition of Sexual Exploitation: Islam strictly forbids any form of zina (unlawful sexual relations) under any circumstances. Coercion, exploitation, or abuse of anyone, whether Muslim or non-Muslim, is a major sin and a violation of Islamic principles. “Do not approach zina. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.” (Qur’an 17:32)

2. Respect for Women: Islam enjoins the protection and honour of women. In the Prophet's final public sermon during Hajj, he addressed the rights and responsibilities of the Muslim community. Regarding women, he said: "O People, fear Allah with regard to women..." (Sunan Ibn Majah) In the Prophet's final days, he reminded his followers to treat women well. It is reported that he said: "I enjoin you to treat women kindly." (Abu Dawood) This final counsel underscores how central the good treatment of women was to his teachings, even in his last moments.

3. Justice for All: Islam promotes justice and accountability for all, irrespective of religion or ethnicity. Exploiting or harming others is strictly prohibited. “Indeed, Allah commands you to uphold justice…” (Qur’an 16:90)

4. Prohibition of Oppression: Oppression in any form, including sexual exploitation, is a severe sin. "Beware of oppression, for oppression will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection." (Sahih Muslim)

Misinterpretations and Misuse: Some individuals or groups may misuse religion to justify their actions, but this is not supported by Islamic teachings. Exploitation of non-Muslims or any group is against the essence of Islam, which advocates for the protection of all human beings. Islam not only prohibits sexual exploitation but also mandates the safeguarding of individuals' rights and dignity.

Deliberate Misrepresentation or Blatant Ignorance: Any suggestions that men who carried out these despicable actions due to their Islamic faith, is either a deliberate attempt of gross misrepresentation or blatant ignorance of what the Islamic faith teaches. Claims that Islam permits exploitation of white non-Muslim women are unfounded and mainly stem from prejudice, misinformation, or the misdeeds of individuals acting contrary to Islamic teachings.
