A Moment of Humanity in the Courtyard of the Hospital (I had to take a pic)

Yesterday at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, I witnessed something truly remarkable. As I walked through the courtyard, I saw four healthcare professionals caring for a patient outside, giving her the chance to breathe fresh air, look up at the blue sky, and reconnect with the world beyond the ward. A simple moment, yet filled with such humanity.

What made it even more powerful was knowing that this wasn’t an easy patient to take out. She was from the intensive care unit, meaning a huge amount of planning, coordination, and effort had gone into this single act of compassion.
The kind of care most people never see.

When I went upstairs to visit my patient, her room was empty, there wasn’t even a bed.
And it turned out that the patient I had just seen outside was my patient.

A humbling reminder of the incredible, often unseen dedication of our NHS staff. The mercy, patience, and love they show, not for recognition, but simply because it’s the right thing to do.

To all our NHS colleagues: thank you. Your compassion changes lives in ways the world rarely witnesses.
